1950年代中期、防空用要撃機としてノースロップ社が開発した機体がF-89【スコーピオン】。
そのテストのプロモーション用として撮影された写真の中に非常に興味深いジャケットと着たパイロットが2人立っていた。
赤いシェルに黒いリブ、そのジャケットはMA-1系のジャケットに相違は無く、写真のキャプション自体もその内容を示していた。
当時、莫大な国家予算を握っていた空軍が最も力を入れていたのが防空用要撃機であったことを考えると何とか次期主力要撃機の座を射止ようとするノースロップ社の意気込みが、こちらの赤いMA-1から感じる取ることができます。
その史実から、赤いMA-1はメインマテリアルである赤いナイロン素材を特別にオーダーして織り上げことから稀少性が高く、その生産ロットは数十着しか存在しなかった。半世紀を時を超え、燃えるように赤いMA-1が今よみがえる。

In the mid 1950's, the aircraft developed by Northrop as an air defense requirement was F-89 [Scorpion].
